Ishita Rathi IAS Age, Early Life and Education

    Childhood and Family Background

Ishita Rathi was born on October 19, 1994, in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Her family later moved to Delhi, where they have lived for most of their lives. The family currently resides in Chhatarpur Village, South Delhi.

Growing up, Ishita was surrounded by public servants. Her father, Iqbal Rathi, works as a Head Constable in the Delhi Police Traffic unit. Her mother, Meenakshi Rathi, serves as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Sarita Vihar in the South-East Delhi district.

Both parents gave Ishita one important lesson early in life: hard work in service of the nation is its own reward. She grew up listening to her mother’s stories about how police officers and government servants protect and serve citizens. This inspired her to dream of becoming an IAS officer from a very young age.

Her uncle also holds a government job in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), adding another layer of public service to the family tradition.

    Schooling

Ishita completed her schooling at DAV Public School, Vasant Kunj (also reported as Basant Kunj), New Delhi. She was a consistent merit scholar throughout her school years. She showed a strong interest in social sciences and economics from an early age.

Her school foundation gave her the discipline and analytical mindset that would later prove crucial in the UPSC exam.

    Undergraduate Education

After finishing school, Ishita pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Economics (Honours) from the prestigious Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), University of Delhi. LSR is one of India’s top women’s colleges and is known for producing outstanding graduates in humanities and social sciences.

Her time at Lady Shri Ram College helped her develop a deep understanding of economic theory, data analysis, and policy thinking.

    Postgraduate Education

For her master’s degree, Ishita moved to Chennai and enrolled at the Madras School of Economics (MSE). She completed her Master of Arts (M.A.) in Economics from this highly respected institution.

The Madras School of Economics is known for its rigorous curriculum and research focus. Ishita’s advanced study of economics gave her a strong base for her UPSC optional subject.

She finished her postgraduate studies in 2019 and immediately began preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

    Family Details

    Father — Iqbal Rathi

Ishita’s father, Mr. Iqbal Rathi, serves as a Head Constable in the Delhi Police Traffic division. He has spent decades in law enforcement and always encouraged his daughter to aim high. Despite being a frontline officer, he made sure Ishita had all the support she needed during her UPSC preparation.

    Mother — Meenakshi Rathi

Mrs. Meenakshi Rathi is an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in the Delhi Police, posted at the South-East District. She is a trailblazer in her own right — working as a female police officer in a challenging and traditionally male-dominated field. Ishita has said in interviews that she was greatly motivated by watching her mother break barriers and serve with dedication.

Both of Ishita’s parents belong to the Delhi Police Department and have been recognized for their contributions. When Ishita secured AIR 8 in UPSC 2021, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana personally felicitated her at the Police Headquarters. He presented her with a memento and praised her for bringing glory to the Delhi Police family.

Husband — IAS Ravi Kumar Sihag

In one of the most celebrated weddings in civil services circles, Ishita married IAS Ravi Kumar Sihag on December 16, 2025.

Ravi Kumar Sihag is also an IAS officer of the 2022 batch. He secured an impressive All India Rank 18 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2021. He initially belonged to the Madhya Pradesh cadre and was posted as Sub-Divisional Officer (Revenue) in Lakhnadon, Seoni district, Madhya Pradesh.

Their love story began during their training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, where both were batchmates. Their marriage is widely described as a love match between two distinguished civil servants from the same batch.

After the wedding, Ravi Kumar Sihag applied for a cadre transfer from Madhya Pradesh to the AGMUT cadre — the same cadre as Ishita — so they could serve closer to each other. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) approved the request on March 9, 2026.

As of July 2026, both officers have been posted together in Jammu & Kashmir under the AGMUT cadre, ending a distance of over 3,271 kilometres between their earlier posting locations.

Ishita Rathi IAS UPSC Journey and Success Story

    The First Attempt (2019)

Ishita Rathi appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Exam for the first time in 2019, right after completing her master’s degree. She did not make it past the preliminary stage in this attempt. However, she did not give up. Instead, she treated the experience as a learning opportunity and went back to her preparation with renewed focus.

    The Second Attempt (2020)

In her second attempt in 2020, Ishita performed better. She cleared the Preliminary and Mains examinations but could not convert her performance into a final selection. Some sources indicate that she scored relatively lower in Economics (her optional subject) in the Mains, which affected her overall result. She once again returned to preparation, this time refining her strategy more carefully.

    The Third Attempt (2021) — AIR 8

The third time turned out to be her defining moment. In the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2021, Ishita cleared all three stages — Prelims, Mains, and Interview — with flying colours. When the results were announced in July 2022, she had secured All India Rank 8, placing her among the top ten candidates in the country.

She was 27 years old when she achieved this milestone.

    Ishita Rathi IAS

Study Strategy — No Coaching, Only Self-Study

One of the most talked-about aspects of Ishita’s success is that she prepared entirely without coaching. She relied on:

    • NCERT textbooks for building a conceptual foundation
    • Standard reference books such as M. Laxmikant for Polity and Spectrum for Modern History
    • Newspapers (primarily for current affairs)
    • YouTube videos and online toppers’ strategy content
    • Morning study sessions — she preferred studying early in the day when her mind was fresh

She set daily targets, not time-based goals. On some days she finished ahead of schedule; on others she studied for over ten hours. The focus was always on completing tasks, not watching the clock.

    UPSC Marksheet Overview

Ishita Rathi scored a total of approximately 1030 marks in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2021 (across Written Mains and Interview combined). Her detailed subject-wise marksheet has been widely circulated on social media and is available through various educational platforms. Exact subject-wise breakdowns from official UPSC records should be verified at upsc.gov.in.
