Neha Byadwal IAS Age, Early Life, and Education

    Childhood and Growing Up

Neha Byadwal was born on July 3, 1999, in Jaipur, Rajasthan. However, she spent most of her childhood and teenage years in Chhattisgarh. This was because her father, Shravan Kumar, worked as a Senior Income Tax Officer — a transferable government job that moved the family across different cities.

Growing up, Neha lived in cities like Raipur, Korba, and Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, as well as Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. Frequent moves meant new schools, new people, and new languages — a challenge that many children would find overwhelming.

Neha also grew up in a large joint family. Her household had around 31 members living together, which gave her a strong sense of community and support. She has four siblings and around 12 cousins, many of whom were also preparing for government exams.

    A Famous Early Setback

One detail that has made Neha particularly relatable to students across India is that she failed Class 5. It is a fact she has openly shared in multiple interviews — not out of embarrassment, but to show that early failure does not define your future.

She also faced language challenges during school. Moving between cities meant adapting to different teaching styles and English-medium environments. These experiences, though difficult, shaped her into a resilient and adaptable person.

    Schooling

Neha completed her schooling at Delhi Public School (DPS) Korba and Delhi Public School (DPS) Bilaspur. Both are well-known schools in Chhattisgarh. Despite the early academic struggles, she gradually found her footing and began to shine academically.

Graduation from DB Girls College, Raipur

After completing school, Neha pursued her graduation from DB Girls College, Raipur — a reputed institution in Chhattisgarh. She studied a combination of History, Geography, and Economics. Not only did she complete her degree, but she also topped the university in her subjects. It was a strong signal that her academic turnaround was complete.

IIT Kanpur – A Defining Achievement

After graduation, Neha did something that very few people manage. She cracked the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) — one of the most competitive entrance exams in India — and secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.

At IIT Kanpur, she pursued a dual degree — a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Economics followed by a Master of Science (M.S.) in Economics. She graduated in 2019. This gave her a deep analytical foundation that proved very useful in her UPSC preparation later.

Getting into IIT Kanpur after failing Class 5 is itself a story of extraordinary growth. It showed that Neha had not just recovered from early setbacks — she had soared far beyond them.

    UPSC Preparation Journey

After graduating from IIT Kanpur in 2019, Neha moved to Delhi and began full-time UPSC preparation. The journey was not easy. She attempted the exam multiple times before finally succeeding.

Attempt 1: She appeared for the UPSC Prelims but did not clear it. She admits she had not prepared with full seriousness at this stage.

Attempt 2: She appeared again and cleared the Prelims, reaching the Mains for the first time. However, she could not clear the Mains.

Attempt 3: She cleared both Prelims and Mains but did not make it through the final Interview round.

Attempt 4 (UPSC CSE 2022): This was the breakthrough. She scored 809 marks in Mains and 151 marks in the Interview — a total of 960 marks — and secured All India Rank 260. She was around 23–24 years old at the time of selection, making her one of the youngest IAS officers in her batch.

    The Phone-Free Decision

Perhaps the single most talked-about aspect of Neha’s preparation is her decision to give up her mobile phone for nearly three years. She avoided social media, instant messaging, and all the digital distractions that consume hours of a student’s day.

She studied 17 to 18 hours daily during her peak preparation phase. Her approach was about eliminating noise and building extreme focus. In her own words, she said that what matters most in UPSC preparation is how you use your hours — not just how many hours you sit with your books.

This decision inspired thousands of UPSC aspirants across India. It also sparked healthy debate about digital detox and mental discipline in competitive exam preparation.

    Training at LBSNAA

After clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination and being allotted the Gujarat cadre, Neha underwent her foundational training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie. LBSNAA is the premier training institute for India’s civil servants, and every IAS officer must complete their probationary training there before taking up field assignments.

    Current Posting – Bharuch, Gujarat

According to official records from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) IAS Civil List and Executive Record Sheet, Neha Byadwal is currently posted as Supernumerary Assistant Collector, Bharuch, Gujarat, since January 1, 2026. This is her first official field posting as an IAS officer.

As a Supernumerary Assistant Collector, she works under the district administration — learning the ground realities of revenue management, public grievance redressal, implementation of government schemes, and district-level coordination.

    Earlier Administrative Role

Several media reports note that Neha Byadwal also served as Joint Magistrate in Jalaun District, Uttar Pradesh, before her current posting in Gujarat. In this role, she handled revenue matters, law and order responsibilities, and grassroots public administration.

    Awards and Achievements

Neha Byadwal’s achievements go beyond her UPSC rank. Each milestone in her life represents a barrier broken and a stereotype challenged.

    5. SSC Exams Cleared Multiple Times Before attempting UPSC, Neha cleared the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) examination multiple times. Rather than settle for an SSC job, she kept pushing for the higher goal of becoming an IAS officer. This shows her ambition and long-term vision.

    6. Symbol of Digital Discipline While not a formal award, Neha’s three-year decision to stay away from mobile phones and social media has been widely recognized across media, educational platforms, and UPSC coaching communities as a defining example of self-discipline. Her story has been covered by major national media outlets and shared across millions of social media posts — ironically, by the very platforms she avoided.
